Summer Learning: USD 443 Educators Gear Up for New ELA Curriculum

Dodge City, KS – If you’ve driven past our schools recently, you might have noticed something incredibly inspiring. During the quiet summer months, our parking lots have been filling up—not for a sporting event or a regular school day, but with the vehicles of dedicated teachers, coaches, and administrators committed to improving their craft.
School might be out for the summer, but our incredible educators are still hard at work. This week, teams across USD 443 gathered to take part in intensive, curriculum-based professional learning to prepare for our newly adopted English Language Arts (ELA) materials.
Why This Summer Work Matters
Investing time during the summer break ensures that our schools are ready to hit the ground running on day one. This specialized professional learning provides a unique opportunity for teachers to collaborate closely. Together, they are:
- Becoming deeply familiar with the new ELA resources.
- Exploring and rehearsing specific lessons and classroom routines.

- Reflecting on how to best use these new tools to ensure every single student has access to high-quality instruction every day.
By diving deep into these new strategies and techniques now, our educators are ensuring a much smoother transition for students this fall. Best of all, doing this heavy lifting now helps us preserve valuable instructional time during the school year, because our staff will be fully equipped and ready to teach the moment the first bell rings.
Putting Students First
Great schools are built by people who continuously learn, grow, and put students first. The willingness of our staff to pause their summer break to engage in this vital preparation is a testament to their professionalism.
We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and commitment demonstrated by our educators and administrators as they work together to create the best possible learning experiences for USD 443 students. Because of their hard work today, our classrooms will be even stronger tomorrow!
