Behavior and Social Emotional Learning (BSEL)

The mission of our BSEL department is to provide all students access to high quality, evidence-based behavior, mental health, and social emotional supports. Here you will find information, resources, and agencies that are available to support a variety of needs.

Crisis Support

Are you or someone you know experiencing a mental health crisis? Help is available. If you need immediate support, please use one of the following options:

  • Call or text 988 – 24/7 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
  • Website/Chat – 988lifeline.org
  • Call 620-227-8566 – Dodge City Compass Behavioral Health 24/7 Crisis Line
  • If you are unsafe right now, call 911

If you are not sure if it is a crisis, please go ahead and call. Please also note that school staff members are not available to support a mental health emergency after school hours, during weekends, or any time students are not in school.

Social Emotional Learning

SEL Resources for Families
We offer SEL resources to support families at all grade levels, including tools for early learning, parent guidance, and bullying prevention. These resources help families build resilience, encourage emotional growth, and promote safe, supportive environments.

Information about SEL Resources

SEL in Our Schools
We support social-emotional learning from pre-k through high school with age-appropriate lessons, counseling, and resources. Programs like Second Step, Character Strong, and SAEBRS surveys help students build skills and receive support, with additional services available for those with IEPs.

Bully Prevention

Bullying has many formal definitions, but typically it is when someone repeatedly uses threats, intimidation or aggression to obtain objects, activities, or social gain from others. Bullying prevention focuses on the strategies for reducing bullying behavior and teaching students to identify and respond effectively to the bullying and harmful behavior of others at their developmental level. The Dodge City Public Schools are committed to the prevention of bullying in our schools through educating both students and teachers about this topic.

Depression/Suicide

Depression is more than sadness, and suicide risk is more than depression. Sadness is usually in response to something specific (i.e. a breakup, a poor test grade, a fight with a friend). The cause can usually be pinpointed or described. Depression is sadness that lasts for a long time (at least two weeks), and does not necessarily have a “cause.” People will typically not be able to answer the question of “why they are sad.”
