About Policies

Board of Education policies are the school district’s official rules and guidelines for how the district operates. The local Board of Education adopts these policies to provide direction for the superintendent, administrators, employees, students, and sometimes families and community members.

Where do BOE policies come from?

They generally come from several sources:

  1. Federal law — Federal requirements can require districts to have certain policies or procedures, such as nondiscrimination, student privacy, and special education requirements.
  2. Kansas law — The Kansas Legislature passes statutes that govern public schools and establish requirements school districts must follow.
  3. Kansas regulations and education requirements — State agencies, particularly the Kansas State Department of Education, administer and interpret various education requirements.
  4. Local decisions — The elected local Board of Education adopts policies to address how its particular district will operate. These can go beyond the minimum requirements of state or federal law.
  5. Model policies and legal guidance — Organizations such as the Kansas Association of School Boards provide model policies and guidance that districts may use when developing or updating their own policies.
