Marlene Barajas receives Horizon Award

KS Horizon Winner Marlene Barajas with Administration

The Kansas Horizon Award recognizes exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding.  Marlene Barajas, DCMS, was named one of the recipients in Kansas. The possible 32 teachers, four elementary classroom teachers and four secondary classroom teachers from each region, will be individually recognized during a luncheon at the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) conference in February. Also, they will be invited to participate as special guests in the two-day KEEN conference. The award is sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education.  Barajas was notified by a surpise phone call from Dr. Randy Watson, KS Commissioner of Education.

According to Gilbert Still, DCMS Principal, “Barajas was nominated for this award because she adapts curriculum as needed while establishing high expectations for all students.  She continually seeks improvement because she wants to make sure she is giving her best to every single student every day.”
