Thursday, July 1, 2010 Dear Parents/Guardians, As a result of a reduction in funding for public schools by the Kansas Legislature, the Dodge City USD 443 Board of Education has instituted instructional materials fees for all students in Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade. Under the laws of the State of Kansas, school districts may charge fees for the instructional materials used by students, including the rental of textbooks, workbooks, instructional supplies and/or technology resources (K.S.A. 72-4141). These fees for the 2010-2011 school year are based on criteria established by the federal government’s Child Nutrition Program for free or reduced-priced school meals. (More information about this program, including an application form, is available from the school district’s Nutrition Program Office at 227-1630 or at First Stop Enrollment Center at 339-4818.) | 2010-2011 School Year | Elementary Schools (Grades K – 4) | Intermediate Centers (Grades 5 and 6) | Middle School (Grades 7 and 8) | High School (Grades 9 - 12) | | Students paying full-price for school meals. | $ 25.00 | $ 25.00 | $ 35.00 | $ 45.00 | | Students qualifying for reduced-priced school meals. | $ 20.00 | $ 20.00 | $ 30.00 | $ 35.00 | | Students qualifying for free school meals. | $ 15.00 | $ 15.00 | $ 20.00 | $ 25.00 | These fees are due and payable upon enrollment of your child in the Dodge City Public Schools. If you are unable to pay these fees at enrollment, the school district will work with you to make regular payments towards the payment of these fees. Kansas law also allows for these fees to be waived for foster children and for others who present a written request that the Board of Education considers meritorious (K.S.A. 72-4107a and 72-5391). In order to receive a waiver, however, you must make a written application to the Board of Education of Unified School District No. 443, and the Board must find the application meritorious. If you feel you are eligible for a waiver, please contact the Office of the Superintendent (227-1700) to request for a Waiver of Instructional Materials Fees form. Please remember that the instructional materials fees implemented by the Board of Education are an attempt to account for only a small portion of the funding lost to the state’s public schools as a result of action by the Kansas Legislature, and represent only a small percentage of the actual cost for the instructional materials used by your child each year. These funds are critical for the continued access to the quality instructional materials provided to your child. Your payment of these fees in a timely manner is appreciated. Sincerely,  Alan R. Cunningham, Superintendent of Schools jueves, 1 de julio, 2010 Estimados Padres/Guardianes, Como resultado de la reducción de fondos para las escuelas públicas por la legislatura de Kansas, la mesa directiva del USD 443 de Dodge City ha instituido un cobro por materiales de instrucción a todos los estudiantes de Kinder hasta el grado doce. Bajo la ley estatal de Kansas, distritos escolares pueden hacer un cobro por los materiales de instrucción usados por los estudiantes, incluyendo la renta de libros, libros de tarea, útiles escolares, y/o recursos tecnológicos (K.S.A. 72-4141). Estos cobros para el año 2010 – 2011 están basados en criterio establecido por el programa federal de Nutrición para Niños referentes a la alimentación gratuita o alimentación de costo reducido. Si no puede pagar estos cobros al matricular su niño/os el distrito trabajará con Ud. para establecer un plan de pagos. La ley de Kansas también permite que estos cobros se eliminen para los niños que hayan tenido un cambio de tutor y que estén en hogares temporalmente y también para aquellos que presenten por escrito una petición que la mesa directiva considere que tenga merito. Para recibir la eliminación de cobros, debe de escribir una petición a la mesa directiva del Distrito Unificado Escolar 443, y la mesa determinará si su solicitud tiene merito. Si piensa que Ud. es elegible para esta eliminación de cobros, por favor póngase en contacto con la oficina del Superintendente al (620-227-1700) para pedir una forma para la eliminación de cobros para los útiles escolares. Favor de recordar que los cobros por los útiles de instrucción administrado por la mesa directiva es un intento para recobrar una porción pequeña de los fondos perdidos a las escuelas públicas por la acción de la legislatura del estado de Kansas, y representan solamente un pequeño porcentaje del costo actual de los útiles de instrucción que usa su niño/os cada año. Sin embargo, estos fondos son críticos para el continuo acceso a materiales de instrucción de alta calidad. Su pago de estos cobros a tiempo se agradecerá. Sinceramente, Alan R.
